Most advertisements make products much betterthan they really are.(2011/8/14)

Istrongly agree to the statement that most advertisements makes the productspresented much better than they really are, and points below supports my idea.

Anessential reason concerns the nature of advertising – advertisers, in mostcases, would only make products seem better than they really are, not the otherway around. Since the ultimate aim of advertising is to persuade people intobuying something,(its products) and people would naturally be attracted by something that is desirablerather than repellent, advertisements are certainly made to display a moreattractive image of products. Therefore, customers would first be gravitatedtowards the virtual product that is somewhat dishonestly pictured byadvertisers, then desire to own it, and eventually purchase it. In this way,the desire of consumers is satisfied, the purpose of production achieved, andthe advertising process completed.

Butthe norm that a “good” product is advertised as a “better” one is oftenchallenged or even reversed – that is, unscrupulous businessmen make use ofadvertising to sell inferior products, which raises a moral question. Forexample, my mother was once attracted by a commercial of an encyclopedia whichwas claimed to be the one and only complete version of several ancient Chinesedocuments. She rushed to the shop and bought this “limited version” at aneye-popping price, and regarded it as one of the most precious things in ourhouse. However, a few months later she found the same version was sold in bulkat another shop at an unbelievably low price, which annoyed her for quite along time. We can learn from the experience that we should not always trust theadvertisements that are apparently exaggerating products, and keep alert in theswarm of television commercials.

However, the notion that “advertisement always make us disappointed” sometimes resultsfrom consumers’ unrealistic expectation of products. Advertising easily makespeople to imagine “perfect” products which are not realistic at all, butconsumers would rather keep this unreasonable hope. Then they would beinevitably disappointed by the actual products which cannot be so perfect, andattribute the cause to advertising. But it is actually the unrealisticexpectation that eclipses any product, because a perfect image is absolutelysubjective and could not even be realized. For example, I once signed up for agroup tour to Lantao Island in Hong Kong, being attracted by the beautiful landscape pictures posted in theadvertisements. But later on in the journey I was disappointed because actualscenery was never as attractive as what I had expected to see. Therefore, anunrealistic expectation is to be avoided in making any buying decision.

Inconclusion, advertisements do make products seem much better than they reallyare, as a result of commercial propaganda and our unrealistic hope imposed onproducts. A better solution would be that both consumers and sellers keep amore realistic point of view, and avoid unreasonable selling or buying behavior.

Euthanasia is a curerather than a poison, for it bringing life a peaceful ending.(2014,8,15)

Adying man lying in the bed is begging his relatives to stop his life. Thisscene in a movie remains in my brain for several years. There is a famoussentence from Seneca, a great Roman orator, “if I must suffer without hope orrelief, I will depart, not through fear of the pain itself, but because itprevents all for which I would live.” Euthanasia is a cure rather than apoison, for it bringing life a peaceful ending.

Firstly, euthanasia embodies the respect to life. Some people believe that euthanasiaviolates the right of living. However, life is not equal to living. “If old ageleaves me not life but breath, I will depart from the putrid or totteringedifice,” said Seneca. Lifeshould be a condition of inner serenity and consciousness rather than a processof battling with uncured diseases with unbearable pain. As a result, when theultimate end is as inevitable as it now appears to be, the individual shouldhave the right to gain a peaceful ending.

Secondly, euthanasia rescues not onlythe dying patients from pain, but also their relatives who are under seriousmental and financial pressure. The opponents urge to stop the appliance ofeuthanasia to procrastinate death, when the dying patients who are sufferingfrom unbearable pain may just feel the endless pain and torment. Francis Baconused to say, “The duty of a doctor is not only to cure the patients, but alsoto ease their pain and sorrow.” On the other hand, the relatives of the dyingpatients are suffering both mental and financial pressure. With the obligationto take care of the patients, the relatives would be in a dilemma. Onceeuthanasia can be legalized, then the pain of both the patients and theirrelatives can be eased.

Lastbut not least, euthanasia can save the rare resources to rescue those who are reallyin need. The resources for human beings are decreasing day by day. However, forthose who are suffering a lot and facing the inevitable death, the appliance ofmedical resources can just postpone death but remain the pain. On the contrary, there are many other patients who can recover with the resources. With theresources left, a beautiful life can be rescued.

In conclusion, euthanasia is a cureto dying people by relieving their pain, remaining their dignity, andfulfilling their valuation of life to rescue another life.  It’s a peaceful and valuableending for dying people to accept euthanasia.
