加州大学本科申请essay 2范文:

during the summer of 2008, i volunteered in the quake-stricken area in wenchuan, china, and experienced a whole new world that i had been blind before.

when i first got to that area, i was totally shocked by the tragic scene and stood in stunned silence for several minutes. the earthquake, which was one of the most deadly tremors in human history, had reduced the area into rubbles and debris. most of the buildings had been destroyed or shattered, bridges and power lines had been snapped, and many dwellers had been either killed or serously injured. i gathered myself up soon, went to the leader of the volunteer team, and asked for a job.

the leader of the rescue team assigned me a task to take care of kids who had lost their families during the earthquake and to make their wounded hearts feel better by talking to them. a boy who had lost his parents really impressed me. when i first saw him, he was on a hunger strike because he felt his life would be completely hopeless. i was sympathetic for him and it was my job to encourage him. but when i started to persuade him to eat, he was indifferent to me. i soon got frustrated because nobody had ever treated me like that. i turned around and left, but soon i started to feel bad and realized that i should not give up, instead i should be more considerate and positive. before the disaster, he might have been living happily with his parents, just like me. suddenly, he lost everything. i guess i would not have been stronger than him if i had been in his situation. so i ran back to him and said,i know you feel desperate, but you have to be strong. you are the only hope of your parents and your parents would never agree that you should abandon your life.to my surprise, he started to talk. he cried and promised me it would be his last time crying, and he would live through all the difficulties. since that summer, my family has been supporting him and paying his tuition fees. i believe that things will get better there, for tens of thousands of families have been supporting people like him.

during the ten-day program, i helped more than 30 kids and learned that dreams and hopes never perish with courage and strong beliefs. (407 words)
