Students in MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering are provided with an educational grounding in the principles common to all materials (structure, thermodynamics, kinetics) before they research a specialized field (biomaterials in immunology, production of latex in ancient meso-America, defect nucleation and growth, to list a few recent projects).

Students should have a master degree for Ph.D admission and bachelor degree is required for Masters admission. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelors degrees are awarded before they enroll at MIT. In general, most departments require significant work in mathematics and the physical sciences in addition to preparation in a specific field of interest, but some admit students with as little as one year each of college-level mathematics and physical science. Submission of an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report with a minimum score of 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test), or 80 (internet test). Many departments and programs require submission of a TOEFL score of 610 (paper-based test), 255 (computer-based test), or 103 (internet test) or higher. Submission of an official International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Academic Module score report with a minimum score of 7.0. Some departments and programs require submission of an IELTS score of 7.5. GRE or GMAT is required for some courses.

Students should submit an application form with $75 application fee for Graduate Programs, $230 for Sloan School of Management Masters Degree Programs. A 500-word Academic Statement of Purpose should be prepared and submitted with the application. Applicants for admission must provide hard copy official transcripts of all work beyond secondary school - undergraduate coursework, graduate coursework, study abroad courses, community college courses, and non-degree courses. Transcripts should be submitted to the Graduate School in an envelope which is university issued and sealed by universitys Registrars office (or equivalent office), requested from the appropriate Registrar with self-assembled application packet for mailing. Three official recommendations are required by the Graduate School. These recommendations must be from persons in positions to appraise the applicants potential for graduate study. GRE, TOEFL Score reports should be attached with the application form.
