A minimum of 72 graduate credits must be earned for the PhD degree. A minimum of 30 credits of this must be coursework, including at least 18 credits of chemical engineering, at least 12 of which must be chosen from ChE 545, 552, 553, 583, 587, 645, 652, 688, 690. The chemical engineering coursework must include at least two 600 level courses other than 699. Coursework for the PhD degree must include at least 12 credits taken outside of the Chemical Engineering Department. This outside work may include a declared minor, in which case the student must meet any requirements set by the department administering the minor.

A graduate applicant preferably should have a bachelor's or master's degree in chemical engineering or chemistry. Applicants must have a class rank placing them in the upper 50% in their undergraduate class. Applicants with records or scores that meet or exceed these guidelines are not guaranteed admission. Admission of qualified students also depends on a match between the student's area of interest and the research specialties of the faculty and the availability of professors. International students must submit a TOEFL score of 550 or higher (213 for computer-based TOEFL).
