The mission of the programs is to provide a stimulating and flexible curriculum in fundamental and advanced topics in electrical and computer engineering, basic sciences, mathematics, and humanities, in an environment that fosters development of analytical, computational, and experimental skills and that involves students in design projects and research experiences.

Students should have completed a course of study in a secondary school that provides both a sound basic education and a solid preparation for the Johns Hopkins academic program. They should have a solid foundation in English language (including writing) and mathematics of four years. Other recommended fields include four years of foreign language, science with laboratory, history and social science. A minimum TOEFL score of 600 (paper test), 250 (computer test), or 100 (internet-based test) is required. Applicants taking the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) should have minimum sub-scores of 26 (reading), 26 (listening), 22 (writing), and 25 (speaking). A critical reading SAT score of 670 or higher waives for the TOEFL requirement for all students.
