This program requires total of 32 courses. Of these, 17 must be in the liberal arts. To satisfy the requirements of any of the three 16-course concentrations offered by the Department of Mass Communication, Advertising, and Public Relations, students take a combination of two courses required of all students, two selected from a list of options, three selected from liberal arts and five from one of the three major areas of concentration (each of which has its own pattern of requirements). The remaining three or four courses (depending on the concentration) are electives.

Students can apply online or download the common application form. The Application fee is $75. Students should submit both the common application form and the Boston supplementary form online. The fee can be paid by credit card while submitting the Common Application and supplement online. Along with application, submit official secondary school academic records of the last four years of study, plus a copy of any terminating or qualifying examination results or certificates. Students who are applying during their last year of secondary school should clearly state the name of the certificate they expect to receive and when. They should send an official school transcript with the application and send the original or certified copies of the credentials. SAT Subject Tests in Chemistry, Math 2, and Foreign Language (recommended) submit scores from either the SAT or ACT (with writing test). Scores must be sent directly to BU from the test administrators Boston University codes to use when registering for the tests are: SAT: 3087; ACT: 1794. A personal statement is also required. Scores of TOEFL should be sent directly to the university. TOEFL code for Boston University is 3087. In lieu of the TOEFL exam, students may submit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
