Postgraduate Studentships
Postgraduate studentships are allocated to full-time research postgraduate students of the University to provide them with financial assistance for their daily subsistence, tuition fees and other expenses that may incur during the course of their study. The studentship award is provided to ensure that students need not concern with looking for other sources of income to support themselves. They should then devote full efforts to their studies.
Awards are made based on academic merit and the suitability of the applicant for the proposed program of study, as is the selection of applicants for admission to postgraduate studies. No separate application is required.
Recipients of studentships may be required to engage in ancillary teaching or research, which supplement their formal degree programs.
Students selected for the studentship awards will receive, in their first year of study, a monthly studentship up to HK$13,000 to be determined by the home department. The continued provision of the studentship in subsequent years will depend on the student's performance and the study progress as well as funding availability. The studentship rate is reviewed annually and may be adjusted upward or downward.

Financial Assistance
The sources of financial support for Hong Kong students include the following:
Government Student Financial Assistance
Full-time research students who have the right of abode in Hong Kong or have resided or have had their home in Hong Kong continuously for three complete years immediately prior to the start of their year of study may apply to the government’s Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA) for financial aid. Assistance is available through the Tertiary Student Finance Scheme – Publicly-funded Programmes (TSFS) and Non-Means Tested Loan Scheme (NLS) and students may apply to both or either one. Application forms are available from SFAA or HKUST’s Student Affairs Office.
Student visa/entry permit holders are not eligible, irrespective of the number of years they have resided in Hong Kong.
University Loans and Bursaries
Local students with financial needs may apply for loans and bursaries administered by HKUST. In general, these funds are used to supplement government financial assistance and not as a substitute. Details of loans and bursaries are available at the Student Affairs Office.
Scholarships and Prizes
The University administers a number of scholarships and prizes on behalf of individual and corporate donors. They are in general awarded on the basis of academic merit and the recommendations of a school or department. Normally, no separate application is required.
