伊利诺大学芝加哥分校创立于1982年，是美国资助的公立研究型大学，是伊利诺伊大学的第二个成员，是在芝加哥地区最大的大学。因为其大量的亚洲学生数量，又被戏称为 University of Indians and Chinese。

伊利诺大学芝加哥分校是由伊利诺大学医学中心与位于芝加哥的分校合并而成。伊利诺大学芝加哥分校为芝加哥最大型的高等教育机构，在学术教学质量上及实际研究成果上，都相当著名，为全美排名前百名的研究型大学之一，曾被《引美国世界与新闻报道》评为三级国家级大学，学术声誉全美排名98。

伊利诺大学芝加哥分校在专业领域上也独树一帜，拥有多种专业的研究中心及机构，如全美最大的医疗学校，并多有[1]杰出表现及获得多种国家级评鉴优良声誉或奖项，如：美国科学发展协会、美国人文基金会等。截至目前共获得超过3.4亿美元的科研经费。学校对于条件优秀的申请者可提供一定比例的奖学金或助学金。

伊利诺大学芝加哥分校位于国际大都会芝加哥的心脏地带。综合所有专业来评价，大概属于芝加哥地区的中段学校(上有芝加哥大学，西北大学等，下有东北大学，罗斯福大学等)，但是其医学院在业内颇具影响力(所以也非常难申请)，而教育专业在芝加哥地区有庞大的关系网。

伊利诺大学芝加哥分校校园由位于芝加哥市小意大利(Littel Italy)和大学村(University Village)的三个园区组成。东校园在希腊城(Greektown)以南的近西锡德(Near West Side)，离芝加哥市中心只有15分钟的步行距离;西校园坐落于在伊利诺伊医疗地区的中心;南校园位于大学村。

UIC的商业管理、工程、社会科学、健康科学、心理学、建筑学颇负盛名，深受学生们喜爱。
