犹他大学始建于1850年，是是犹他州内最大的一所公立大学，被美国国家公园环绕。犹他大学还是一所隶属摩门教的大学，尽管摩门教的影响力相当大，不过大学不会强迫非教友入教。犹他大学University of Utah在校学生人数约为26000人，分别来自全美50个州和全世界109个国家。

作为美国第一类研究型大学之一的犹他大学，具有完整的学士、硕士及博士学位项目，犹他大学拥有73个系和94个研究学科，其中心理学在全美广受好评。其商学院、理学院、法学院及公共管理学科在美国享有盛誉，体育管理专业在2002年盐湖城冬季奥运会举办后也成为非常热门的专业之一。《美国新闻与世界报道》将犹他大学评为学术声誉全美排名第83名、全美本科综合排名第129名(2011 年)。由于在科学研究上实力雄厚，犹他大学跻身2009年全美Science科研实力TOP50大学排名榜(第46名)。

犹他大学学生选读最多的学科是心理学，获得好评的学科则有商科、传播学、美术、计算机科学、工程、采矿、以及化学等自然科学。前一两年有5,095人投考，4,491人获录取。 近八成学生都获得校内兼职工作，每年每人平均赚取2,000多美元，校外兼职也十分容易找，有机会被评为“excellent”。校内除了获选攻读荣誉学位的同学孜孜不倦外，其他学生的学习情绪都十分轻松。

犹他大学设备有环境生物研究中心、人类遗传学实验室、政府研究中心、图书馆、自然历史博物馆、植物园、艺术博物馆等，运动设备有体育馆、篮球场、网球场、排球场、田径场。2002年国际冬奥会的开幕式及闭幕式都在犹他大学体育场举行，奥运村也设在犹他大学的新建学生宿舍区。坐落在校园内的科技园有58个高尖科技公司，这些公司大部分由犹他大学的教授和学生开创、发展。

犹他大学位于犹他州Utah的首都盐湖城 Salt Lake City，盐湖城Salt Lake City位于大盐湖东南方，人口约有十七万人左右。犹他州Utah主要的地理环境为盆地、山脉区(如落基山脉区及科罗拉多平原等)。大盐湖(世界第2大咸水湖，第一大为死海)位于犹他西方的盆地及山脉区。盐湖城Salt Lake City的博物馆有很多，像盐湖城艺术中心、犹他州艺术博物馆、自然历史博物馆、隶属摩门教的教会历史与艺术博物馆等，另外犹他州Utah有5座国家公园、2座国家休闲 游憩区、48座州立公园、6座国家纪念建筑物。犹他州的气候因地形、季节的影响，整体来说，1月份平均温度约摄氏零下7度-摄氏4度左右;7月份平均温度约摄氏16-29度左右，是个阳光充足之州。
